Summary of Question:Listening To Japji Sahib And Rehras In Car
Category:General Sikhism

Sats Sri Akal,

Each day on my way to / from work, I listen to Bhai Harbans Singh Japji Sahib and Rehras in the car, with my head covered but with my shoes on. I find it very soothing to listen to this but am worried as to whether I should also remove my shoes as we would in the gurdwara. I do occasionally but avoid due to safety aspects of driving as it is not comfortable for me. Is this okay ?. I do recite it through the romanised version when I can or when I am traveling abroad.
Thank you for your kind advise and I pleased to note that in many of the topics raised by the others, you have answered a lot of my queries.

Kind regards,
Gurcharan @ Chani

Sat Siri Akaal. Very good question. I do this often myself, but cannot drive without shoes. There are those who say that the ONLY way to recite bani is head covered, sitting with Gutka, and shoeless. That is fine.

But in technological, post-modern times, where we work much longer than we did before electricity -- we do what we can when we can. Our Guru is Shabd Guru, so think in terms of the fact that you are connecting to Shabad Guru, Who can be anyywhere when we recite Gurbani. But we cannot be shoeless everywhere. Isn't it better to recite in such fashion as you describe rather than not at all? When looked at this way, reciting in a car with shoes on and head covered is acceptable. Always cover the head when reciting any Gurbani.

I hope this helps. Guru ang sang,
-DKK
