Gur Fateh

I ,Harpreet Singh Matharoo, am a student in UTS Sydney and have just came over here in Australia, before I was living with my maternal parents, mamaji and mameji.I was brought up in a typical normal sikh family. But after I shifted I do not feel good and miss my place ,family and especially the teaching that I got from my nanyji, mameji etc. Here I am often asked by people to get rid of my hair or atleast wear a cap saying what would happen if u wear a cap it wont make any difference I am not a fanatic person by nature but I hate anyone saying disrespectful to my hair and my turban. How can I counter these questions? I want to be called a Sikh but I know my self that I am not so much strong to go ahead and baptism my self and be called a true sikh. And also if some one does not get baptised then is he not a sikh? Who are we if we are not sikh?

Harpreet Singh ji,

Greetings and blessings to you in the Name of God the light of every soul and in the Name of Guru the life of every SIkh.

There are many with your very same dilema. It is so important to feel the support of your community around you. And you are a Prince of the Guru. You do deserve respect and honor...expect it!!!! Also, accept the challenge that Guru has placed in front of you too.

Yes, you are a Sikh if you love and following the teachings of your Siri Guru Granth Sahib ji. Follow your Rehit and feel yourself grow strong inside. When you feel ready; then do take the Amrit. You know you love this life of the Gursikh, you are missing Sadh Sangat to affirm you amidst all the maya in the lives of the others around you.

Some suggestions:
1.start a Sikh Student Group
2.print some of the brochures from Sikhnet....to give to people you meet....so they can learn more about WHO you are! Here in New York, we have passed the brochures out on the subway trains to help let people know that we turbaned people are the Sikhs. Most Muslims in our counrty DO NOT wear turbans.
3.contact your local Gurdwara and go to kirtan programs and meet other Sikh youth and families there in Sydney.
4. Contact [email protected]..... or call 61-3-9458-3571 and find out some good Sikh connections in your area. You can also talk your dilemma over with Guruneel and get some great advice etc.
5. Remember, you are not alone! God and Guru are always with you. FEEL THEIR PRESENCE in your breath!
God bless you and "Keep UP".
SKKK
