Summary of Question:Is There Similarity Between Sikhism And Hinuism And Islam
Category:General Sikhism

Many of my history textbooks constantly refer to sikhism as a mix of islam and hinduism. I personally believe that this is only said beacuse these religions were the major religions of the region during Guru Nanak Dev Ji period. Whenever I talk to my history teachers they usually ask me where I am from and then proceed to say that they know alot about sikhism(mainly saying that it is a mix of islam and hinduism). How much validity is in there statements? I see a similary in the cultures but not in the sacred belief systems. Is there more similarity then i think? Thank You for taking out time to answer my question and those of others.

(REPLY) Sat Nam. You are right that we are unique. Unfortunately in the past things have been written that are not accurate, and people have not understood the the unique features of Sikhism: The respect for all other religions, and no attempt to convert others; Our Shabd Guru, the Siri Guru Granth Sahib as a LIVING GURU; distinctive way of dressing to identify ourselves as Sikhs; bowing to no person but only bowing to the Guru, and worshipping only the One God who breathes in everyBODY. To say that we are a "mix" of other religions is not correct. Even in Siri Guru Granth Sahib there are portions where our Gurus rejected the practices of both Hinduism and Islam. I think you already know all this! blessings, SP
