why have women lost their status/ rights...(im not sure of the word to use here), in the sikh reigion.

if we had more amritdhari women. who had greater power or simply their right of equal power and status to that of the men i personally belive we would have stronger sikh children.

when you go to the gurdwara often you see them servign in the kitchen which is seva but not very many leading prayers. if we had more younger amridhari women leadin prayers in the gurdwara i think this would help devote more panjabbis to the full sikh path. in a way this would encourage and influnce young sikhs. it would not chnage everything but it would make improvements.

Issues of women in leadership roles come from the culture, itself. How are the women in the sangat spoken to? How are they treated by their fathers, brothers and husbands? Are they in abusive situations? Are they equally educated to men? Leadership requires confidence and self-sufficiency. But too often, culture does not give women the experience of confidence and self-sufficiency. So even though Sikhi does offer a chance for women to hold equal leadership to men in the Panth, still-the ratio of women to men as leaders is very small.

How can this change? Is it a very big question. But the first step may be creating a non-violent, non-judgemental space for the sangat to come together and begin to communicate about these issues. If you are interested, learn some skills as a group facilitator or mediator and then begin holding sessions where the dialogue can occur. You will find out through the conversations what needs to happen in your sangat so that women can step forward as equals and lead.
