i have been asked a question by someone which i need help with please:

"if you drink alcohol can you still read gurbani, do paat or do simran? not necessarily drunk however even if you just had a sip of beer or alocohol would it be a sin to read paat? what is your advice?"

The answer is a simple NO. The guru is trying to make you into the pure.

You would not disrespect your family and the guru is the head of that faily and so please do not disrespect the guru.
