Hi,

I am a very confused sikh. I have only just found out how important my religion is to me and i really want to find out more about my religion. But i don't know where to start. I feel bad because a couple of months ago something bad happened and i lost all faith in god. I'm not even sure if there is a god. Or if he even loves me. I don't read punjabi and i only go to the gurdwara once a month. Whats wrong with me? What shall i do? How can i become a better sikh?
(REPLY) Sat Nam. To think that only good things should happen to us is very unrealistic! Life is made up of events and circumstances which come to us to enable us to pay off karma from past lives, and to learn the lessons this "school" of life offers, so we can "graduate" and happily return home to Akal Purkh - from which we all came. God loves ALL His creatures. God proves his love by breathing in you! Without God's love and presence in you, you would not exist. So if you want to become a "better Sikh" -- start by learning more about what our Guru's taught. Explore the SikhNet website. Go to the Home Page and follow the various links. Also, you can read Macauliffe's "The Sikh Religion" -- it gives the history in detail. The other thing that is most essential is to get up early every morning (before sunrise) and recite Japji Sahib (You can find it in English translation as well as transliteration on SikhNet) and then chant God's name. This daily spiritual practice is the cornerstone of faith. It will connect you with your true identity, that SAT NAM, which is your immortal, divine self. Each of the banis has a special blessing for those who are wise enough to recite them daily. I wish you well! SP
