Satsriakhal.

I am a 26 year old British born unmarried sikh. I Have been a strict veggie for the past 10 years and have no regrets. I don't drink alcohol nor do I take recreational drugs or smoke tobacco. I have stopped cutting my hair and beard since the last three years and I wear a turban. I do daily path and naam simran (Gurumantar, Moolmantar and Kirtan Sohaila)... oh and I am a virgin and plan to stay so until I get married!

I shall be 27 next month and have had a burning passion to take Amrit for a few years now. I feel mentally ready.

But there is one thing holding me back... I cant read punjabi/Gurmukhi. Will I be allowed to take Amrit since I cant read from Gurbani? Could it not be possible to take Amrit and continue with path and naam simran daily?

I really want to take Amrit before I get married (I plan to get married within a couple of years or so) because I think it will be hard if after marriage I take it and and my partner may not want to go down this path of sikhi but then I also know of some people who are amritdhari and have married non-amritdharis who are veggie and dont drink alcohol/ dont smoke and have had no problems.

Also is it possible to take amrit from Gurudwara Sri Anandpur Sahib (where the first Amrit ceromony was conducted)?

Thank you for your time and patience.

(REPLY) Sat Nam. To find out if Amrit Parchar is conducted at Anandpur Sahib, I would suggest that you write a letter to the Head Jethadar there, and ask. It is not a requirement to be able to read Gurmukhi or speak Punjabi in order to be blessed with Amrit! I would recommend, however, that you make every effort to learn to read Gurumukhi, simply for the joy and fulfillment it will give you! REading from Siri Guru Granth SAhib and reciting your banis in English is wonderful, but the experience of feeling the "rasa" the flavor, the taste of those syllables exactly as they were spoken by the Gurus is even more marvelous. Oh, it just occurred to me that possibly in one of your local Gurdwaras they may know about Anandpur Sahib's schedule. Blessings, SP
