Summary of Question:Marrying A Non Sikh (Ii)
Category:Love & Marriage
Date Posted:Saturday, 2/01/2003 11:26 AM MST

I would like to say I am truly touched by the comments from eveyone who has responded to my original question. I'm very thankful to SP, the Catholic lady and S Dalip Singh for taking the time to share your views. I was worried at first that I might get responses discouraging me from what I'm doing.

When it came to telling my parents initially, it took a huge amount of courage to sit and tell my mum for my parents had always told me that I could only marry a man of the same religion and caste and that if I ever thought any different then I need not bother coming back. I felt they would feel betrayed for it took a lot for them to let me study and work in a different city. I have explained to them that my intention was never to hurt them and that I wasn't actually looking for someone - my boyfriend and I were friends at first before we had any feelings for each other, which is why I believe we get on so well.

I will keep in mind all the suggestions made by everyone when I see my family next weekend - its just I get scared when I try to explain to them how much my family and my boyfriend mean to me and they say I can't have both. I know I need to prepare myself for the consequences which I might face over this relationship and until now have felt alone as my family have forbidden me to talk about this with anyone else in the extended family. But once again thank you , you have made me feel a lot better.
