Summary of Question:Re: Guru Granth Sahib Alive?

Sat Nam.

The moderator who responded to this question in an earlier post made mention of recordings of Granth Sahib. Are there any in English to your knowledge? I am moderately dyslexic and the study of Gurmukhi comes slowly to me.

I am reminded of a practice in a local Gurudwara where, at the end of each service, Guru Granth Sahib is wrapped in layers of white cloth while a bani (Chaupai, I think; is the spelling correct?)is sung, then two kids come up, pick up the sabres lying before the Holy Book, and lead a procession to a small room where Granth Sahib is placed until the next service. The other Gurudwara does not do this, but then they have their own Granthi while this place does not.

The respect shown for the Holy Book is remarkable to me, even after being in our Sikh community 3 years. I grew up Catholic and had much exposure to other Christian congregations. They love their Bibles, but I have never seen such outpouring of total reverence as I do at Gurudwara, especially the place with the procession. You all who have been raised Sikh, look upon having God's word among you as a privilege! My husband has been to the Golden Temple and remembers seeing the real, original Granth Sahib in a glass case. We have the unadulterated words straight from the mouth of God and the pens of the Masters. People whose spiritual eyes are shut just see a book, but what we bow to is the spirit of the Bani and the goodness of God who lives in the Word.

Blessed be,

Elizabet
