Sat Sri Akal,

i'm a 20 year old married girl. honestly, i'm a mix of east and west cultures. i've been brought up in a mixed environment. i do not know how to read or write punjabi. but i still try and do path using a hindi gutka. i'm confused because i've been told alot of time that i'm not right in doing path and at the same time shaping eyebrows etc. i know that is wrong but i think i can stop doing that too if i have enough support. i really want to put myself on the right track of religion. i'm told that since i'm career minded and modern, i'm wrong.
is it true that a person cannot be career minded and religious at the same time? and is using a hindi gutka bad?please help me
PS - my husband is not supportive either. he is a typical ABCD>

(REPLY) Sat Nam. Yes, you can change yourself if you want to . Anyone can! (BTW, I don't know what "ABCD" means in reference to your husband) Anyway, living Sikh Dharma does not mean that we run away from the world and do not pursue a career. On the contrary, we should excel in the world, so long as we have our religion and our faith as our base and foundation! There is nothing wrong with reading your banis in another language! You can find English translations also, as well as Gutkas written in Gurumukhi with transliteration as well as translation, so that you can pronounce correctly (well, reasonably correctly) and also understand the meanings. I don't believe that our Guru is limited or would want to limit anyone from reciting the Words of the Guru! Yes, it is hard when you don't have support along your spiritual path, but if you really want to experience the blessings of the Guru, you can certainly do a lot on your own. Please check out everything on the SikhNet website. and get some Gurbani CD's to play and learn to sing along with -- especially DHAN DHAN RAM DAS GUR -- the mantra "for a miracle"!
