Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa,

Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

Just would like to share some general thoughts in hopes of giving deeper insight to the teen who is having difficulty in deciding where to go to school. I have been fortunate enough to receive an excellent education from two fine private Catholic institutions from grade 8 to grade 12. The education I received from these schools was top-notch. Not only did I learn the relevant subject material necessary for my transition to undergraduate school, but I also developed important skills that are essential to succeed in college and beyond. As an amritdhari Sikh attending a Catholic school however, (I was bestowed with the gift of Amrit in the 8th grade) I learned to appreciate one of the most important Sikh principles -- the principle of Ik Onkar (seeing one God in all). In learning about the life of Jesus Christ in our religion class, in attending the masses (both mandatory and voluntary), in singing the praises of the Lord alongside my Catholic friends, in doing hours of community service, I became aware that the God that they praise is also the God that I praise. The Lord that thrives in their souls, is indeed the Lord that thrives in my soul. The illuminated soul of Jesus Christ was in fact the same enlightened soul of our Gurus. The teachings and philosophy are essentially the same; It is only in the way that they are expressed that they differ. My journey through High School and the unravelling of this beautiful concept has allowed me to not only learn about another religion, but has also allowed me to understand and deepen the love of my own.
In regards to keeping kirpan and covering your head, have your parents talk to the principal of the school and have them kindly explain to them that these are religious requirements. I'm positive that they will understand, as did my school.
If you choose to attend, please understand that there will be times in which ignorant people will depict their ignorance and insecurity by putting you down. Take it in stride and try to educate them about Sikhism and all that it entails. Hopefully they will come to the understanding that although the two religions differ, they are rooted in the same ideals. If they do not understand, just leave them be and go with God's Will.
Also, don't worry about what other Sikhs will think of you! I too was a very involved in Sikh programs, camps, and Gurdwaras as a Sikh youth (and still am!). My Sikh peers all knew that I attended a Catholic School. If they are truly Sikh and truly your friends, your attending a Christian School would not affect your relationship with them one bit. Wherever you decide to go, study hard and always remember His Name.
May Guru Bless you and Guide you always!
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa,
Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
