This isnt a question but i would like to share a similar experience with my dad. He has been drinking for about 15 yrs. Within the last 3 years his problem got really bad. He would sleep 24hrs and at times went to work still drunk. He lost so much weight and looked real sick. At times i would have to splash water on his face just to see if hes breathing and he would sometimes not be able to go to the bathroom. His problem was really bad. But it has been a year and he has been sober. I guess he just got sick of hearing it from us and he just realized that he was going down-hill. It was one incident when my bro. had to carry him to bed because he was so drunk and he must have realized that changes have to happen. From what ive learned, punjabi people would not attend AA meetings, they feel its a waste of time. What you have to realize is that he must want to change. That is the most important thing, he must realize that he is going down the wrong path. my dad used to say the same thing about not being able to digest food, but honestly that is just an excuse and people who drink a lot look for the simplest of excuses to justify what their doing, i could write a book on the excuses he gave us. But keeping supporting him, get him involved in activities, something like going for walks or just talking to him, get his mind off the booze. My dad would not do any of these things, but we kept on his back to stop drinking. if you have any siblings get them all together and keep bugging him to stop. thats what we did. if you have any questions, you can reach me at [email protected]

(REPLY) Sat Nam. It is Guru's grace that your father has remained sober - with your help. Usually, it requires the desire on the part of the drinker to stop, and even so, strong intervention is necessary. You say Panjabi's think AA is a waste of time, well, statistics have proved different! Ignorance and arrogance do not solve a problem, willingness to admit there is a problem is the first step toward a solution. However, your advice is certainly useful, and certainly might help. Thanks for sharing and caring! Blessings, Sp
