Dear Moderators

Plz post this for the student regarding the school choice. I respect the moderators opinion but just to clarify in the English school system there are colleges and grammar schools. The sister who posted is only 15 years old and A-levels are known as Post-16 education.

I went to what is the equivalent of a grammar school - the reason your parents want you to go to the Grammar school is I'm assuming it is a better school as Grammar schools are usually better than colleges - not to say you will fall into stereotypes but a number of people who go to colleges do not do as statistically well as those that go to grammar schools.

If the College is better than the Grammar schools then you can look at the School League tables to justify this (these will be available in The Sunday Times archives) I would recommed you do some research into the performance of the two establishments and see which one is the best - you will probably find the grammar school has a better educational standing.

I used to commute 45 mins a day to go to a good free school in this country whenI could have gone to a college - believe me everything matters when it comes to A-levels and results the higher your a-levels the better the results and the better the university you can go to - if you go to the place with the better teaching standards I would hope that with some hard work of your own you would be able to achieve this...I would not recommed taking time out to work as at the age of 15 this is no the best thing to do ....you would end up 'missing the boat' with regard to the September 2006 academic year.

So a mini action plan:

1) Look at the school league tables
2) look at the performance of the students
3) then if after that you still think that the College is the better choice then that's up to you - I certainly would not base your decision on where your friends are going or the commute - it mught seem difficult now but for the future the best possible teaching is the most important thing!!
