I read that suicide is wrong in sikhi, I know someone who has committed suicide but people say his time had come and he was supposed to die this way...How can that be if suicide is wrong? And some people say that we have to accept waheguru's will "Bhaana" .........

thanks

Sat Siri Akal.

No one really knows what happens between a soul and God when someone commits suicide. Yet, whenever someone decides to take their own life, without warning, or because of depression - it creates a tremendously painful impact on the people that are left begind.

The Guru teaches us that the human body is very precious. We earn it after 8.4 million lifetimes in other forms. Through the human body, we have a chance to consciously experience the Divine. Because of that - even if our life is filled with suffering and hunger - the Guru says it is still a gift from God. So an attitude of gratefulness for the human body and experience - even when it is most challenging - is what the Guru teaches.

In this day and age, so many people suffer from a sense of hopelessness - that life has no meaning. And for them - suicide is the answer to their pain. The pain that people feel that drives them to such a moment is so deep and so complete - none of us can know what happens to that soul. Only God has the Infinite Vision and Compassion to know what the truth is.

For those who remain behind, praying for the soul that it finds peace is a way to help handle the grief we may feel. And spending time meditating on the gift of human life is another thing that may help.

Really - if the society was healthy - suicide wouldn't exist. So it's not an individual problem - it's a sign of what's happening in the entire community. Strengthening your own spirit, appreciating your own life and expressing your appreciation to the Creator with a grateful prayer is something that will help make the whole community healthier and perhaps be a force that helps someone else not make this same decision in the future.

I hope this has been helpful.

Bessings and love.
