Sat Nam. Who is a Sikh is not determined by the language you speak. I would highly recommend that you learn to read Gurmukhi, so that you can have the blessing of experiencing the Guru's words in the original language in which they were spoken, but you can read English translations, and still consider yourself a Sikh. I suggest you read the Sikh Dharma manual (you will find the link to it) on the home page of SikhNet, so that you have an overview of what it means to be a Sikh. Literally, a Sikh is student of truth. The first "Sikhs" were the students, or "sishyas" of Guru Nanak, who taught a universal ethic based on the worship of One God, remembrance of God's Name, and day to day righteous living, without discrimination against anyone because of their religion, gender, caste, or color.

Blessings, SP
