I think you're missing the point, you cannot marry someone with the same surname because you could be marrying someone from the same area as your family. So if you're surname is Gill and you marry another Gill, they will be from teh same villages as you, you could be marrying a far relation. Thats why you avoid you surname and you're mothers surname.

we are not muslims who marry their cousins!
