Summary of Question:Mind Not In Peace While Doing Nitnem
Category:Meditation
Date Posted:Saturday, 5/31/2003 1:27 PM MDT

Sat Sri Akal.Sir,I am already 73 plus loaded with all the worries, including health problems e.g hypertension, heart trouble, arthritis and name whatever you would want to.Being a devoted Sikh,I have been doing naam simran which in the early stages of life was not quite regular as the life was involved in building the family and to fulfill various commitments.Being retired already,I am now completely devoting time towards simran, doing Sukhmani,Japji,Jaap sahib,Rehraas and listening to shabad-kirtan,besides handling other chores of life.My problem is in NOT getting a real peace of mind or DHIAN in total depth which I have tried very hard to achieve. While doing gurbani simran the mind would always sweep me towards several unimginable existing or non-existing stuff. How to get rid of unwanted stuff from the mind especially when I am meditating.May be,I am not doing it right.Despite my ailments,I try to wake up early in the morning and spend a maximum time in simran, but NO DHIAN.Sir,help me to invoke the true bliss of dhian and peace of mind at the time of simran.Fateh.

Sat SIri AKaal. Please search this site using the category 'meditation' and you will see other posts with the same issue. The mind puts forth 1000 thoughts in the blink of an eye. No one but a perfected being has Dhian in meditation. The simran and paath you practice are CLEARING your mind. The important thing is to not hang on to or 'grab' the thought. Watch them pass through as if you were gazing out the window of a train, watching scenery go by. It is the same. And if a thought seems to grab you, chant waheguru waheguru to neutralize this thought. Keep up.

Some pointers. Be in quiet space without interruptions for your practice of naam. Sit straight, in a chair or on the floor. Do your best to practice in the amrit vela, because this time is a pure time, and dhian is far easier to achieve at this time than any other. Don't focus just on the gurbani paath. Spend time chanting the naam (satnam waheguru, mul mantra, 17th slok of Sukhmani, other Naams of God.) I find it helps to use a mantra tape or cd for naam simran, unless I am practicing with others. Keep up and you'll be kept up. You are progressing even if you feel you are not! Guru ang sang,
DKK
