Sat Siri Akaal. Sukhmani Sahib is best recited all at once, but I realize that is not always possible. It is OK to recite it in a whisper, since I know other train riders can be irritated when we recite too loudly. It is incorrect thinking to presume that reciting it silently is the cause of your wife's anger or your son's illness.
The family that PRAYS together stays together. Why you don't recite it as a family? Even if you recite half in the morning and the other half at night, together, see the results. If your son is too young, find a way to have him in the room when you recite, and as he gets older help him read it with you. Using a Gutka will help keep you focused, especially when you do it together.
If you get resistance from your family to reciting together, then recite in their presence or in a room with the door open. Recite it beautifully, so they are drawn to the sound current.
If you continue to do it by yourself, then use your powers of the mind to focus light and love around your family members while you recite. This technique should help to smooth your daily ups and downs (typical of any family).
I hope this helps. Guru ang sang,
