i was just woundering what the use of the kara was for. someone once told me that it protects you and it gives you good luck. is this true.

No. The kara is worn as a symbol of devotion to God and Guru - like a wedding ring, the kara is sign of the soul-bride's marriage to Guru. On the large ones, the heavy steel of a kara could also be used as a weapon in combat. It is not about 'good luck' -- that is a most non-Sikh way of thinking, since Sikhs believe that all that happens is God's will, and not about 'luck.'
