Summary of Question:Eating Meat According To The Akal Takht Is Right
Category:Sikh Practices
Date Posted:Tuesday, 3/12/2002 12:21 AM MDT

One of my friends told me that it is okay for sikhs to eat meat according to the akal Takht. I am not sure if i should believe him or not. he gave me this quote from the following web site "http://www.sikhs.org/meat.htm" and the quote reads

"The Akal Takht represents the final authority on controversial issues concerning the Sikh Panth, in this regard the issue of meat eating has been settled. Hukamnama issued by Akal Takht Jathedar Sandhu Singh Bhaura dated February 15th 1980 that Amritdhari Sikhs can eat meat as long as it is jhatka meat and that eating meat does not go against the code of conduct, Kurehit, of the Sikhs. Thus a Sikh cannot be excommunicated for eating meat."

i have read many of your answers on your webb site and they make sense to why sikhs shouldn't eat meat, but i still wanted your opinon on this quote. I would also like you to vist the other website and tell me where are thye getting there infromation from

Thank you for your help
*********************************************************************************Dear one,

There are many references in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib(already in the youth forum) which state that meat should not be eaten. However, the Guru says best to not waste your time debating on whether someone eats meat or not. Being a vegetarian is a point you get to when you decide not to eat animals. There is no question that it has a more elevating effect on your body and mind.

You are right, a Sikh cannot be excommunicated for eating meat. In fact excommunication is really not our way. Our God is forgiving. So, we should be forgiving too and keep up!
