Waheguru Ji Ka khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! What is dangerous is trying to open one's third eye WITHOUT practice, discipline, and grounding. Someone whose third eye is open too soon can actually go crazy and become so ungrounded that they forget to keep up their daily routine of living on this planet. It is foolish for someone to rush such a process. A person whose third eye is open in accordance with their spiritual development has intuition and neutral mind.

One of the reasons that kundalini yoga practitioners 'tune in' is to invoke Guru's protection so that spiritual practice does not overwhelm one's ability to process it (The mantra for tuning in is Oooonnnngg Namoh Guru Dayv Namoh". So, when you sit to meditate please do this mantra or invoke Guru's guidance & protection in your spiritual development with some other mantra, then do your meditation. Also make sure your head is covered (I don't know if you are Sikh and wear a turban) and be sure to sit with a straight spine. I am glad that you meditate. Just don't rush the process, grow with it. Guru Ang Sang,
-DKK
