It depends upon you and the elder in question. For some people, it can be a genuine sign of respect and the hearts of both people understand this, so there isn't a problem. But if it feels uncomfortable, like you are bowing to that person or giving up your sovereignty, then find another way to express respect that feels appropriate for you.
