Hi. I'm going to highschool next year. I want to go to a public school, because that's where most of my friends are going, but my parents, especially my dad, wants to send me to a Christian School. I don't want to go at all. It's very expensive, but my dad said, I want you to get a good education and not get into the wrong society. I understand that, but they teach Christianity (.5 credit each semester)and if I were to be baptised as a Sikh, I can not wear a kirpan, or cover my head. The other highschool that I am going to is crowded and there are a lot of different kinds of people there. At the Christian school, you have to wear uniforms with craz prices ($35 for a tie!) and the teachers are like all over you, always watching you and the teacher to kid ratio is 1:10. I go to the gurduwara a lot and am involved in a lot of things related to Sikhi and if anyone else find out they might say stuff about me. What do you think.

(REPLY) Sat Nam. I think you're in a difficult position, because you probably have to go where your parents send you. You say a "Christian" school. Is this a Catholic school? They have a reputation for being very strict, and that's not a bad thing -- and usually they provide good quality education, and certainly there's nothing wrong about learning about other religions. However, I appreciate your wish to be in an atmostphere where you can be YOU. Also, I don't know what city you live in, and possibly the public high school is overcrowded, and your dad is also probably concerned about a possible drug scene/ In my mind, the ideal would be for you to go to the Miri Piri Academy in Amritsar India, a Khalsa school which would give you an opportunity to get education in our Sikh tradition and values in addition to an accredited "western" education. Pray for guidance, and for what is "best" -- and let God and Guru decide! Blessings, SP
