Guru Ji gives us a lot of techniques like breathing and listening to shabad. The baisic goal of meditation is to focus the attention lovingly on the infinite. So start by focusing your mind. You can focus on your breathing (the voice of your soul) or on the sounds your breath makes. Especially when you speak the shabd of the Guru you are speaking Truth and as God is Truth as you focus on the shabd you experience Truth and therefore experience God.
Another thing Guru tells us is to empty the mind to allow it to be filled with God's love. So, as thoughts come let them be there but don't chase them arround, just keep your focus on the sound and the reality of the present. Don't be dragged arround by your mind.
I hope that helps.
