Dear John,
Sat nam. For those converting to Sikhi, alterations of the body that cannot be reversed, such as circumcision or tattoos, do not count as something against you. Having irreversable alterations on your body does not make you any less of a Sikh! If/when you become Sikh, and certainly for any Sikh convert who becomes baptized in the Amrit ceremony, a vow is made not to (further) alter the body in any way, except for medical necessity (for example, a ruptured spleen that is removed). I cannot speak to your query about Mardana.
Guru ang sang,
-DKK
