Summary of Question:Importance Of Hair In Sikh Religion
Category:Hair
Date Posted:Sunday, 6/19/2005 9:36 AM MDT

Sat Shri Akal,

I am a 22 year male from Raipur (INDIA).I belong to a BHATIA family and my family is very found of sikh religion and many of my family member are Amrit Dhari. They follow all the religious deed with great faith and fanaticism. They always force other member to follow the same practice and are very stict about all the RAHAT & MARYADA.
Though I love my religion, but I am not very fanatic about the religion. And I never got a suitable reason for having the Beard & HeadGear(kesh).I donot want to keep it anymore ,as it make me to spend lot of time in caring & maintenance of it.I simply want to clean shave my hair.I find it very difficult to devote half an hour every time whenever I want to go somewhere out.
I know no one is going to appreciate my decision but I want to live my life that way.Its also possible that my family will not accept me after it,eventhough I want to cut it.
I also want to raise this topic in behalf of all the sikhs who do not want to keep their hair but cannot do so under the pressure of their family, society. Many of my friends think the same way.
I want to know whats the importance of hair in sikh religion.Whats the need to keep it and spend lot of time in its caring. Why a person who donot want to keep it, is force to do so.This was not the message from our Guru to force someone to follow certain rules.
Plz donot consider me a rebellion ,I simply want to know the reason for having KESH in sikh religion and consider this commitee(SGPC) as the right place to clear my all doubts and views.I am waiting for your reply.

ThankYou.

Sat Nam Balbinder Singh,

First, I would like to direct you to the topic of hear on our site. There has been much discussion of this topic. Then, come back and we can discuss it further after you have read the other postings and thought about it. Also, as far as the care of your beard...if your beard is natural, meaning not tied up, I don't know what care there is, except to oil it and brush it out every day. You can also put conditioner on it when you wash it. Otherwise it is a lot easier than having to shave every day. Tying it up is a British tradition. Be proud of your beard and let it flow. So, read the other posting about kesh and beard and then write back. Blessings. GTKK
