Waheguru ji ka khalsa,

Waheguru ji ki fateh.
i want to ask u a question that CAN AN AMRITDHARI PERSON CAN EAT CHICKEN(NON-VEG). bcoz in our rehat maryada there is no clarity about eating non-veg after amritpan. As in our RehatMaryada it is written that AN AMRITDHARI PERSON SHOULD NOT EAT THE MEAT THAT IS PREPARED WITH THE MUSLIMS WAy(kutha halal kita hoya maas). so tell me that can we eat the chicken which is 'JHATKA' .so plz clear my this doubt.

Guru fateh ji,

Sat Nam Gagan Preet Singh,

Many people have been writing in asking about Sikhs being Vegetarians and why it is so important. It is always difficult to get a clear answer from scriptures, because they can be interpreted in so many ways...especiallly according to the reader and how that reader wants to believe. I will therefore answer you from a view of "consciousness." As Sikhs, our main goal in life is to live in consciousness and harmony. Being a vegetarian is a very conscious commitment. There are many reasons. 1- All animals have souls, which are reincarnated just like we are. 2- It takes much more land, electricity, water and other resources to grow animals than it does to grow grains. 3- With just 10% more people being vegatarians, we could feed the hungry in the world. 4- Meat is much, much harder to digest and leaves one open to much more disease, including high colestrol, high blood pressure, cancer, heart disease, etc. 5- Meat contains harmones, making it much harder for the consumer of meat to be calm, peaceful and neutral...making it much harder to meditate and pursue spirituallity. 6- I believe that eating meat is creating Karma, because one is taking another life, which has a soul. I can't help but wonder if all of the "mad cow" disease is just nature's way of fighting back. The name of the disease is appropriate...animals are "mad." Well, these are a few of the reasons to be a vegetarian...whether one is an Amardhari Sikh or not...being a vegetarian is the conscious thing to do. Blessings. GTKK
