waheguru ji ka khalsa

waheguru ji ki fateh

i have been wanting to ask this question for quite sometime now..

i read your replies on how we must defeat ego and the 5 sins.. but i dont understand a clear way to overcome them

i listen to keertan and do paath.. but i still feel my mind losing the battle.. i want to be humble.. and see everyone equally and lose my attraction for wordly atachments and devote my life to Naam and Guru.. but i dont seem to

i sit in the gurudawara and listen to katha and keertan and i often read translations from Guru Granth Sahib..

what am i doing wrong?
how can i overcome this state of mind.. i am engulfed in the Sins..

Sat Sri Akal,

I admire your desire to become pure, I really do. It is hard to control the 5 human emotions, to be humble and to have no attachment. What you are doing is exactly the right method though. Go to Gurdwara as often as you want and read from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib as often as you want/possible (Punjabi and English translations).

Also, do you paath daily? Maybe you can start reciting Japji Sahib in the mornings after you wake up. It takes 10-15 minutes, I'm sure you have time for this. Maybe when you get used to doing Japji Sahib (like in 2-4 months, or when you feel comfortable) you can start doing Kirtan Sohila at night. And then gradually build up to doing Rehiras at night too. I'm not saying just start doing all this tomorrow. Move up slowly.

It is also very important to know and understand the meaning of paath, so if you can do that that would be excellent. There are several website which give somewhat good translations (like www.sikhs.org).

As a final comment, I'd like to say that if overcoming the 5 human emotions and ridding yourself of attachment and living a humble life were easy then everyone would do it and the world would be a much better place to live. But it's not, it's hard. I really admire you in your pursuit of the Truth.

Please ask more questions if you want to.

Gur Fateh,
HSD
