Summary of Question:Why Can I Not Sit With Sister Or Mother At Langar?

WGJK WGJKF,

Hello, I have a quick question - twice I have tried to sit with my mother and sister while eating langar but at both those times I have been told to move and sit with the 'men'. Why is this so? Sikhi speaks of equality and also mothers keep their children in their womb for several months feeding them there. Also, is'nt everyone meant to be equal when eating langar?

So if I can sit next to my brother/father why can I not sit next to my sister/mother?

Thankyou for any help.

(REPLY) Sat Nam. If you were in America, you could sit with your mother and your sister for langar. We follow what the Guru taught: Khalsa has no gender, and certainly for langar, there's no need to separate men from women! I think it's just a cultural tradition, and although we do sit separately in most Gurdwaras during the ceremony, I don't see why you couldn't sit with anyone during langar. SP
