Sat Siri Akaal. If you want to know Sikh history, study this Sikhnet site and other Sikh sites (start with www.sikhseek.com) for history. It's all published on the web now and there is no need to key it in again here!
If you would study Siri Guru Granth Sahib (also on this Sikhnet site), you would see that gurbani says often that the One Lord, the Creator, is in all. In Japji 4th pauri it says "Nanak ayvai janee-ai sabh aapaay sachiaar" -- "Nanak, He is all-in-all." A person can be defeated in any battle. It is only by God's grace and protection and WILL that anyone is not defeated in battle. God is not defeated; read Guru Gobind Singh's Jaap Sahib and see what he says about the Creator.
Understand that 10th Guru never saw himself as THE CREATOR, but he indeed did understand himself to be Divine, and he knew God from within, which is how anyone knows God. This is also in Gurbani. God is within all beings. I cannot cite from this computer all the gurbani references to that fact. Still I think you should study it for yourself. If there is some battle you are trying to win (at work, at home, whatever), then praise God and turn the whole thing over to Him, and of course, do your own best. If you don't win, there is probably a very good reason for it. guru ang sang,
