This is in response to both your questions regarding nitnem. It is best to do Nitnem during the Amrit Vela, after taking a shower, - that's when you derive the maximum benefit. One should sit in a quite and clean place and try to focus on the banis. If your mind wanders, try to consciously but gently bring it back to the banis. But don't try to overstress yourself on this. Gurmat works gradually at a steady pace though.
Yes, an Amritdahri Sikh should do nitnem every day. Just like one satisfies physical needs by consuming food and water, and sleeping, similarly one should meditate and do nitnem for the spiritual needs.

i am an amritthari sikh who believes in sikhi very firmly.i want to know what is the best way of meditating.sometimes when i do nitname(i know all the five banis by heart)i am thinking of something else.does that make my nitname useless?please throw light on this and help me become astill better sikh.can we do nitname while taking bath or doing some work?what if we are not able to do nitname always in amritwela?does that make our nitname use less?please enlighten me on this.
