Summary of Question:Marrige After Divorce
Category:General Q's from Non-Sikhs

I have met a sikh man who has a child from a previous partner. I am a divorced woman with three children of christian faith.

Would sikhism allow us to get married, or is it be a cultural barrier as I have been previously married.
His family do not agree and he wants to keep it a secret. I believe in God and want to do the right thing.
Can you advise.

(REPLY) Sat Nam. There is no "prohibition" agains remarriage after divorce. however, you are wise to realize that culturally, there are definite barriers and problems! Your three children have been so far raised as Christian, and your fiance's child is a Sikh. If you marry and have more children, how would they be raised? How would the existing children get along with each other, and how much support can you give to a Sikh husband, if you do not share his faith, his way of worship? Christian faith revolves around worship of Jesus the Christ as God. Sikhs do not worship, or bow to any 'person" or incarnation as God. -- though we recognize that God lives and dwells in each of us. We bow only to our Shabd Guru, the siri Guru Granth Sahib. the success of such a marriage as you are contemplating is very problematical, plus the factor of friends and relatives on both sides compound the difficulties that will surely arise. There's no easy answer to your situation. How much to do you know about the Sikh religion? How strong is your personal religious commitment? You need to discuss all these things before you attempt another marriage ourside your own faith. May God bless you all with wisdom and guidance to do what is best for all the children, and for each other. SP
