HELLO SIR,SAT SRI AKAL,

THANK YOU FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTION.I HAVE FEW MORE DOUBTS,HOPE U CLEAR IT.HERE ARE FEW OF MY QUESTIONS:
1)HOW DOES A SIKH GET A SURNAME LIKE SODHI,BHATIA.....etc?I AM A CONVERTED SIKH IN THIS CASE WHAT WILL MY SURNAME BE?
2)DOES A SIKH WEAR THE 5K's ALL THE TIME(LIKE WHILE SLEEPING,WHILE DOING MORNING WORK LIKE in toilet....?
HOPE YOU DON'T MIS UNDERSTAND ME.

THANKING YOU BHASKAR

Sat Nam. First of all, I dont' believe anyone is a "converted" Sikh. If you decided to become a Sikh, it would not be because anyone converted you, but rather that your soul recognized it's identity as a Sikh! The surnames you mention are those that were inherited from past generations. They are not something that you decide to take on. Actually, as a Sikh, your surname would be Singh if you are a man, and Kaur if you are a woman, and if you choose to add the name "Khalsa" it would indicate that you have taken, or plan to take Amrit and live to the injunctions of the Father of the Khalsa, Guru Gobind Singh when he baptised the Panj Piare, the first "Khalsas." Two of the attitudes to be avoided in any religion or spiritual path are fanaticism and laziness, so as to wearing the 5 K's every single moment of the day and night, when you are alone, "doing morning work," etc. and does not make sense to me. I believe the 5 k's are to be honored as reminders of commitment, and are worn in public in honor of that commitment. Especially the turban is worn in public so that we cannot hide our identity! Blessings, SP
