Sat shri akal ji,

firstly I would like to thank you for having such a site, where the confused youth of today (like myself) can turn to now and then instead of being to embrassed to ask our parents. It isn't easy growing up in a WHITE MAN'S WORLD (i live in australia) and being asked so many questions everyday. I have been trying to answer a question about why hair are DIFFERENT from nails to a australian friend of mine. I read through all the scienctifical information on this site and forward to him. His next question was...

" It was mentioned that Hair can change colour acording to a persons health, diet and general well being.
I would like to know when a person Hair attains it final length how does it manage to change colour ?"

he also said to me that hair are DEAD CELLS...could you please give me a detailed scienctifial answer which will answer my australian friend. Thank you very much and keep up the good work, now i know where to turn to when i do have a doubt about anything related to sikh.

PLease reply soon and let me know.

Dear One:

Sat Siri Akal. There are currently 250 posts on this Sikhnet Youth Forum about hair in which most of your questions above have been answered. Using keyword 'hair' you will find them. See in particular the one entitled: "Why A Sikh Keeps His Hairs While He Cuts His Nails?", dated 5/13/1999. In it is a URL for a scientific article on hair. This site is not moderated by scientists, so I also suggest you and your friend use an encyclopedia on the Web or at a library, to answer some of the questions you have about hair.

I will add that when left to grow, everyone's hair will grow to the length that the body needs it to be. This is different in everyone, and is governed by many things: genes, environment, diet, age, health/disease, etc. The same is true for why one's hair sometimes changes color. Of course, most everyone's hair will turn gray or white as part of the aging process.

Thanks. God bless you.
-DKK
