waheguru ji ka khalsa, sri waheguru ji ki fateh!

i am myself a sikh, as are my parents. we do not eat meat or take intoxicants since we took up sikhism many years ago. both my parents have arthritis in thier legs and have been told to take cod liver oil by the doctor. the problem is that my father refuses to take it, since it is technically a product from the killing of an animal. i try to tell him that it will help his joints become stronger and more supple, so they can move easily without pain and stifness, but it makes no difference. i think it may help if i have another opinion, do you think it is okay to take the cod liver oil for health reasons?
Thankyou for taking the time to answer this trivial question.

Sat Siri Akaal. For MEDICAL purposes, I think taking products from animals is OK, but in the end, it is a deeply personal decision. I have heard of Sikhs who refuse surgery if it means cutting their hair. Your father could be seen by some as fanatic, and by others as deeply devoted. So it is his decision. I do not think Guru would object to anyone taking cod liver oil as medecine.
However, you might look into taking golden milk: Cook up tumeric until it is a paste (it has to be cooked). Add 1 tsp or more of this paste to 8-10 ounces of milk and bring to an almost boil. Then add 1-2 tablespoons of pure almond oil and whisk it. Drink warm. The tumeric and almond oil can help the joints, so I have been told for some time. I do not have bad joints, so I cannot attest personally, but your father has nothing to lose by trying this alternative. It would be OK to take this 2 or 3 times a day.

Guru ang sang,
