Summary of Question:Is It Legal For A Sikh To Marry A Non-Sikh Partner ?
Category:Love & Marriage

Equality of all religions is what all the ten Guru's of Sikhs teach us. So keeping in mind their teachings is IS IT LEGAL FOR A SIKH TO MARRY A NON-SIKH PARTNER ?

On the other hand our's Guru's strictly gave us the orders that we should not indulge in idol worship. So is there any harm in marring a person who wants to marry a sikh but still after the marriage wants to practise his/her religion which may include idol worship.

Thanks

Sat Nam. The answer to your question is quite simple, IF you really mean "legal" For, legally, i.e. according to law (which depends upon the country you are in, but in the United States certainly) the question of the religion of the bride and groom does not arise. You can marry anyone, "according to law." However, if you are truly trying to live a live devoted to God and Guru as a Sikh, you will be very slow to commit to a marriage with a partner who is not a Sikh. What about the children who will come of this marriage? How unfair to inflict upon them an identity crisis as children! It may seem easy to say you will each follow your own religion and respect the beliefs of the other, but it will surely cause problems sooner or later. Think carefully! Blessings, SP
