Kathuria's Campaign Diary: A Sikh's Bid For US Senate

Special to SikhNet from Dr. Chirinjeev Kathuria
February 20th, 2004

Week of February 2-8
This is Dr. Chirinjeev Singh Kathuria's second diary entry as he moves forward in his bid for the US Senate in the state of Illinois. Dr. Kathuria is currently campaigning to receive the Republican nomination for the US Senate seat.

This week was a whirlwind of media interviews, debates and fundraising events for the Campaign Team and myself [Dr. Kathuria]. We were thrilled to find out that we received the endorsement of the Independent Voters of Illinois – Independent Precinct Organization (IVI-IPO).

One of the ways that we’re keeping up with all this activity is by maximizing the use of new technologies in our daily lives. For example, my Deputy Campaign Manager, Jagdeep Bachher, checks our email from his Blackberry device on the way into the office each morning. We’re always connected to our email, and get notified of new messages instantaneously. One morning last week, while out at a meeting, I got an email from a gentleman who had just seen a picture of me in the media and wanted to know more about me and my campaign. He stated that he was very impressed that someone with a beard and turban was running for public office, especially after 9/11. I wanted to acknowledge this sign of support. You can imagine his surprise when I called him from my cell phone only minutes after he sent his email!

I feel strongly that our representatives at all levels of our government should reflect the diverse population of the United States.
