Summary of Question:Clothing For Non-Sikhs

My partner and I have been invited to a wedding in a Sikh Gurdwara in England. I read your answer to a similar question but am still concerned that there are certain colours which should be avoided when deciding on clothing. Should skirts be worn or would trousers or a combination of the two be most acceptable and should colours be bold and bright or understated. Thank you in advance for your help, I am deeply concerned about offending the families of the couple. Do you have any advice about wedding gifts as well?

Yours,

REPLY:

Sikhs and Sikh weddings especially are wonderous, gregarous affairs and full of music, dancing and fun. There is a of course a ceremony and for the temple the only requirements are that you wear modest clothing(long skirt that covers legs etc) and cover your head with a scarf and take off your shoes. Other than that feel free to wear bright festive colours and enjoy. Also feel free to ask questions and people will be very receptive and helpful. You can of course call the family that invited you and see if they have particular pointers especially if you wish to wear Indian style clothing. They will feel very honoured. DO tell them of your budget as Indians and Sikhs especially can go overboard. Also it is not rude to ask to borrow something as well.

Hope that helps.

For styles and clothing especially for women look up www.ritu.com. It has most indian contemporary clothing for wedding etc. You do not need to purchase anything like that.
