Summary of Question:	Helping Sikh Students

Sat Sri Akal,

I have just finished my first year at a UC. I have seen that many of our young sikh students lack motivation, understanding, and most importantly direction in the context of their future educational plans. I have discussed this with sikh/punjabi students attending other universities. It seems as though our culture (not religion--most definitely) isn't as conducive to a attaining a higher education, as perhaps other cultures (Hinduism, etc.). Of course there are many variables to consider: background, parental guidance and education, environment etc. I know there might be disagreements on this issue, but I wish not to debate here. I am only presenting my objective opinion.
In order to mitigate these problems (or cracks in our educational upbringing), a friend of mine and I have started a mentoring group on Yahoo. Since, I am in the US and in california, even more specifically Northern California and Bay Area, this would be most applicable to those living nearby. But I feel that by putting it on the web other sikh students can find the inspiration to begin their own programs.
Our mentoring program is called SYMC--Sikh Youth Mentoring Club. We will provide a forum to all those students who need help with getting into collge, financial aid advice, writing personal statments. Since, we have mentors who are M.D. Programs, Ph.D. programs, MBA programs--any student needing help will be able to find it here. WE will also have activities.

I am very passionate about helping out students attain their highest potential in education and learning. This is one way we can spread out and have influence to help us further our causes whatevery they maybe.
