Summary of Question:Issue Of Amrit ( For A Female)
Category:Hair
Date Posted:Wednesday, 6/26/2002 11:24 AM MDT

I've read many of your articles on taking amrit, and yet still a bit confused. If I do not take Amrit, does this mean that I am not a "true Sikh?" And...by taking Amrit, is this the only way to escape the 84 lakhs, after we die?? I don't feel I'm ready to take such a big step, or ever will be. I am young female and I feel as if I will not be able to not remove hair on my body....especially with my career. Yet, I am ademant about doing Paht everyday...and Naam Jaap as much as possible. I try to live my life as honestly and respectfully as I can, and I feel like I am doing okay. So, if I don't take Amrit...does this mean that I don't believe anything in Bani and what our Gurus said?? Please do help me...and if possible, provide me with a passage from the Guru Garanth Sahib that pertains to this matter. Thank you.

Wahe Guru Ji Ka Khalsa
Wahe Guru Ji Ki Fateh

Wahe Guru Ji Ka Khalsa, Wahe Guru Ji Ki Fateh.

Go to the Guru-there are many passages that will give you the answer you need. Everything that happens, happens by the Will of God-in His time and in His way. When He wants you to take Amrit, the call will be unmistakable and irresistible.

The soul has its own process of maturity that has to be honored and respected. You will know when (and if) it is the right time for you to take Amrit. And if you don't get that calling, then it isn't God's Will for you. No big deal. Are you a Sikh? That's up to you. Is the Siri Guru Granth Sahib your spiritual guide? If so-then you are a Sikh. No one can take that identity away from you. No one can destroy that relationship you have with the Guru. Amrit is a special ceremony for certain souls who need to live that discipline to clear their karma and realize their dharma. But being Amritdhari does not make a person more spiritual than another person, more special than another person, or closer to the Guru than another person. What will happen to you when you die depends upon how you live your values and your identity as a Sikh. Taking Amrit doesn't guarantee anything.

The Guru is very mellow and relaxed. He tells us all the time not to worry or have anxiety about anything. So-let go of your anxiety about Amrit. Continue loving and serving the Guru as best you can and let life unfold. It's just one big adventure, anyway.

Gur Fateh.
