Sat Sri Akal,

This is an excellent question. Why doesn't Waheguru listen to what we want, to fulfill our desires? If we paath everyday and are good people, then our desires should be fulfilled, right?

The problem lies with our desires. We don't know what our desires should be and we definitely don't know what is the best for us, only Waheguru knows that. What are our desires? They vary from person to person but they usually revolve around worldly things, money, education, friends and even family. A desire to get into a good college or a desire to see a terminally family member well again is in a sense, materialistic. It is attachment that we should try to eradicate.

Furthermore, if we or our children don't get into the college that we desired, then maybe it just wasn't in their karma, or maybe going to the best college would not have been the best thing to do. Only Waheguru truly knows. If our desire is to see a family member well again, but then he dies, then maybe it was his time to go back to Waheguru, regardless of what our desire was. Only Waheguru knows what to do.

These are just two examples of how we don't really know what our desires are. Waheguru will do the best thing possible for you, whether you know it or not. If your desire is not met, no matter how badly you want it, then it is not because you are bad or Waheguru is "out to get you", it is because Waheguru knows what is truly best for you in the end and will let only good things happen to you.

In SGGS, page 264,
"Lakh karoree bundh na puraa. har ka naam jupath nisthare"
-"Acquiring hundreds of hundred thousands, our desires are still not fulfilled. Meditating on the true Naam, we will all find freedom."

The only desire we should have is to rid ourselves of Kaam, Krodh, Moh, Lobh and Ankhar. The only desire we should have is to merge with Waheguru, because once merged with Waheguru, all our desires will have been met.

Gur Fateh,
HSD
