WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH!

I was reading an excerpt of gurbani today in which the following line was said:

"Those who remain immersed in the Fear of God become fearless"

(found it on http://www.sikhitothemax.com/PageASP.asp?PageNo=223&SourceID=G)

I've heard many times over that you should fear no one but God... This has confused me though, how do you fear God, why do you fear God? I've read on this website that ways to get rid of your fears are to face them, and also, does all type of paat help get rid of fear? Or is it a Sikh's faith that rids them of fear?

The fear of God has confused me a lot too.

Thank-You in advance!

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSAAAA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH!!!

Sat Sri Akal,

In Sikhism, one should not fear anything. Not even god. God is not there to make you fearful. Waheguru is something you want to attain, and the Gurus have shown us the way to do it. Waheguru is nothing to be scared of.

If you fear something, then doing paath help to calm your mind. This is keeping faith in Sikhism. If you do paath but don't believe that it is worth anything, then it won't affect you as much as it can if you have full faith in it.

Sometimes when translations are made of the Guru Granth Sahib, they are just plain word by word literal translations. In this way, the true meaning of it is lost, especially if one starts reading it only in english without the full benefit of the real wording. Also, you can't take an english translation at face value, a lot of ideas that are present in Indian culture are unheard of in the western world, and sometimes there are no words that can accurately translate from a Gurmukhi word. Each line of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib makes more sense if you can read it in punjabi, and if you read the lines in the same pauri, and finally if you study Gurbani to get the full essence of what the Gurus were saying.

Gur Fateh,
HSD
