Dear One:

Sat Siri Akal! It sounds like your parents would rather you speak --maybe a little incorrectly-- than not speak Punjabi at all. I think from their perspective it is a sign of respect, even though I know you mean no disrespect when you speak English. Do not be embarrassed. Ask them for help if you are unsure of the correct grammar. You are young and it will be easier for you now than when you are older.

Your culture is understood through language, so in later life when you travel to India on pilgrimage (I am guessing you do not live in India!) you will appreciate being able to speak correctly, especially since Punjabis will look at you and EXPECT that you can converse with them. It is a worthwhile effort. Since you are well grounded in Punjabi already, ask Waheguru for the strength and discipline to honor your parents in this manner. I think that the more you do it, the easier it will be!

Good luck! Guru rakha,
-DKK
