Dear sir

satshriakal,
I had a problem whose solution i am not able to find from anyone . The problem is that some people have said my mom that girls should not take head bath on tuesdayas, thursdays n saturday. Know some people say that even we should not eat non-veg on these days also and now coz of these instruction we have a lot of problems if we go on a party we some times get only non-veg to eat but we cant eat.My Mom is purely vegetarian but myself ,my dad n my brother all of us eat only chicken in non-veg n the other vegetables. Now one more problem which arises is that some people say that these restrictions should be limited to married or non-married girls or ladies only.
I would like to tell u also that we only me n mom only dont take head bath on tuesdays n thursdays n as my mom doesnt eats non-veg even i dont take any non-veg onthese days n even my dad n bro also but dad n bro take head bath.
I would like u to tell me whether we should obey all these things or not if "yes" then "why"n also whether for "married" n "non married" .
My age is 16 years.

Dear Shikha,

Sat Siri Akaal Ji. I have never heard of such restrictions and practices! They are certainly not Sikh, and are probably based on superstitions. Sikhi says nothing about when a person should or should not wash their hair, although it does teach us to keep ourselves clean. Sikhs can wash your hair WHENEVER they need to, whether or not you are male or female, married or unmarried! The same goes for eating or not eating meat. Although we believe Sikhs are not supposed to eat meat EVER, we have never heard of restrictions saying that on SPECIFIC days one can or cannot eat meat (the Jewish and Catholic faiths have such restrictions, however). Additionally, Sikhi makes no comment on whether women or men should or should not eat meat. None of the meat-eating Sikhs I know observe the restrictions you describe. The only possible genuine reason I can think of for not eating meat on certain days MIGHT involve a MEDICAL, dietary purpose.

The only authority and counsel a Sikh has is the Siri Guru Granth Sahib. We were given the Siri Guru so we would not have to rely on superstitions to guide us in our life.

God bless you,
-DKK
