Sat Sri Akal,

Sikhism does not condone circumcision. Why? Mostly for the same reason as why we don't cut hair, it is natural to males and is there for a purpose. The foreskin protects the penis, similar to how eyelids protect the eyes. Do you want to remove your eyelids?

Why are people circumcized? Jews do because they have to pay for the sins of Abraham. Muslims also have religious reasons. Why do 70-75% of Americans get their genitals mutilated? Originally (in 1700s or so) it was thought to be cleaner and more healthy (and indeed, if you only clean yourself (shower, bath or even just a sponge down) one a month or less then it is more healthy, however if you only bathe yourself less than a month you are going to have much more serious problems). From this it just became a tradition since everyone was doing it it *had* to be right (that is sarcasm).

As far as being less fertile, what did humans do before technology existed to be circumcized? If a foreskin makes you less fertile, then why did evolution naturally select such a body part? Obviously, the notion that an uncircumcized penis makes you less fertile is a myth made up by people who want to keep the tradition of genital mutilation alive. Why? Because they are circumcized so they feel a need to exact "revenge" on others. Think about it, a baby is about a week old and then a part of his penis (one of the most sensitive parts of the male body -- it has one of the largest density of nerves in the body) is brutally and barbarically cut off, without any anesthesia. This kind of pain lives throughout the baby's life. Instead, Sikhism teaches to keep humans natural and to love them and give them care, instead of intense pain.

How about sexually? It is a fact that an uncircumcized penis has more feeling than a circumsized penis. This is because a circumsized penis does not have anything to protect it and gradually the nerves in it become dulled to the pain to the point where they stop working. You can even do an experiment, if you are uncircumsized, pull your foreskin back and put your underwear on, it will hurt!!
But that is exactly how all circumsized people are like, so it is quite obvious they have much much less feeling.

I am not a woman, but it is conventionally known that women think uncircumsized penises are more desirable during sex, because since the male can feel more he is more responsive. The reason women in America want circumsized men is because traditionally all men have been circumsized and they believe this to be normal when in fact it is the exact opposite!

A brief word about female circumcision: some societies still practice female circumcision. This involves the cutting off of the clitoris and, depending on the exact society, many times the young girl's (usually 12 or 13) labia is sewn together and a stick is used to poke a hole through it (to allow for blood discharge during a woman's period). This is generally practiced in Muslim tribes in Nort/West Africa. This is done because these societies believe that women should not have any pleasure, and by being circumsized, it will prevent them from wanting to have sex. Once married, the husband literally rips the sewn labia apart (think how hard it is to rip a sewn piece of cloth, now think what it would be like if it were skin).

Am I incorrect to say that Jews and Muslims who are circumsized because of their religion are wrong? No, Sikhism teaches to be tolerant of all, yet it also teaches right and wrong. Through the Guru's teachings I can say that this part of their religion is wrong, but that doesn't mean that I have the right to convert them or forcibly change their ways. I can teach them, and that's all, if they don't want to listen there is nothing more I can do.

In summary, Sikhism does not condone circumsicion, Sikhism abhors it. Not only is it religiously wrong, but there is no health benefit (as long as you bathe more than once a month) and it in fact decreases your sensitivity. American women's proclivity to circumsized males is due totally to miseducation and tradition (remember, tradition is hard to break, no matter how wrong). Female genital mutilation still occurs, though much less than male genital mutilation.

It is important to never condone circumsicion unless it is the last option in a medical crisis (which is pretty rare). Teach your fellow friends and peers about the misconceptions of circumsicion.

Gur Fateh,
HSD
