Summary of Question: | Gurdwara In Detroit? |
Category: | General Sikhism |
Date Posted: | Monday, 5/28/2001 9:25 AM MDT |
I recently moved to Wayne State University in Detroit and was wondering if there was a gurdwara nearby. If there is, is it accessible by public transit?
Thanks for your help!

Dear Sukhdeep Ji:
Sat Siri Akal!
Start here to look for a gurdwara in your area. http://www.sikhnet.com/Directory Click on "gurdwaras" on the left and then go to United States, then Michigan, by clicking on the little blue triangles.
If that doesn't work, take a Detroit phone book and look up last names "Singh" or "Khalsa." I once found an ashram in Washington DC (years ago) by looking for last name Khalsa. Then be bold and call the Singhs or Khalsas and ask them if there is a gurdwara near you or where local gurdwaras are. They will either know or give you someone else to call. From my own experience (and I'm a woman), I have had Sikhs who were relative strangers offer to pick me up for Gurdwaras and then get me home when public transit was not an option. In the end I was helped and looked out for.
Good luck to you! Guru Rakha,
