Sat Nam.

I can't speak exactly on how to go about establishing residential facilities for our elderly Sikhs; this is something which first needs a great deal of cash, and many dealings with municipal officials to secure land in an area zoned for such a facility, building permits, construction crews etc. But please consider a few suggestions.

First, to speak with the sevadars of your sangat to see how practical it would be to set up a charitable trust for donations toward the purchase of a vacant facility to be converted into housing accessible to the elderly and disabled. There are places in many cities just standing around, waiting to be made into something useful. You may also need the advice of a competent attorney in this matter.

Second, see about a kind of ministry to those who are elderly and disabled; call together some serious volunteers who are willing to take these aunties and uncles to the store, doctors, sports, cultural events etc. There is an organization to help bring animals to visit the infirm for their therapeutic value (and as a former nursing assistant, I know it works) so ask your local animal shelter or vet... get the kids of the sangat involved to "adopt a grandma." Organize a drive to collect books to give to these old souls; many are shut-in and all they have to look forward to is a good read. Pack up some books with a few cookies and a tea bag so they can relax over a nice gift.

I hope this will help you.

Elizabeth
