Summary of Question:My Kara Is Making Me Itch!
Category:Other
Date Posted:Wednesday, 11/06/2002 8:11 PM MST

I've been having a nasty little rash around my wrist, right where I have my kara. One friend recommended I paint the inside of the kara with clear nail polish, but that doesn't seem quite right to me. My husband suggested I find something in sterling silver, but again that doesn't seem right. I've heard about pure iron bangles that aren't supposed to cause allergies, but these are unavailable where I live. Do you know of maybe a mail-order place where I can find something that won't drive me crazy for itching?

Many thanks!

Sat Siri Akaal. I have known several folks alergic to their karas; it usually is because the kara is not 100% stainless steel, it includes nickel sulfate, and they are reacting to the nickel. Once a kara with nickel sulfate is worn for a while, it becomes duller and grayer than pure stainless steel. So, you need to find a 100% stainless steel kara. How to tell, look for the brightest ones. Or, if someone can test using kinesiology (sp?) to determine if a kara is all steel or a mix. Iron ones should not cause a problem, these are easy to spot because they look 'unfinished' or 'unpolished' and also, like they were hand-shaped.
Go to www.sikhseek.com and search the 'shopping' section. Also, www.sikhlink.net is a U.S.-based reasonably-priced organization for Sikh things.
