Summary of Question:Comment On Last Name Singh (Or Kaur)
Category:General Sikhism

The name "Kaur" is not a Persian word. It is used in the Hindu Epic the "Mahabharata"

The "Kauravas" were the antagonists in this epic and the name literally translates into "sons of a lioness"

Thank You

I think linguistically that there may be relationships between Sanskrit and Persian, but I do not know for certain. THat said, kauravas is SONS of lioness, so that is still not a female.... Appreciate your insight nevertheless.

Remember that a word's original meaning is not necessarily the meaning we use now. SO, Sikhs say that Kaur means princess, and this is, among Sikhs, universally understood. A current Punjabi-English dictionary would hopefully INCLUDE this usage. Language evolves. The word 'cool' did not mean sophisticated or 'with it' until the latter half of the 20th century in the English speaking west, but now that is indeed one of the meanings of cool. Like that! guru ang sang,
