Summary of Question:Past Karma Being So Strong
Category:Meditation
Date Posted:Friday, 2/24/2006 5:19 PM MST

Firstly, I like to thank the Sikhnet team from the bottom of my heart for their priceless efforts.

Almost every day, I read all of the new Question answers that come up.
The answer to all the solutions as we all know is "Waheguru's" name.
However, I have a sister who got married about 25 years to a miserable husband.
She had very rough times with him.
Anyway after about 18 years of their marriage, she moved downstairs to the basement. He lives upstairs with his mother.
For the last 7 years, she has been living in the basement suite with her 3 kids.
She is amritdhari. She does nitnem, sukhmani sahib, asa di var every day. Whenever she has a day off, she even does 5 sukhmani's path. She's always rememring "Waheguru" at work and at home, lives a very simple life.
Presently, all her kids do not listen to her. They hate their daddy but not like her either. She had her daughter learn Punjabi & Kirtan when she was 10 years old and now that she's 15, she's cut her hair and does not want to do Kirtan or path. Her two boys 21 & 20 wants to do things their own way. They will never listen her. All 3 kids spend hours and hours on the internet and will not listen to her. The solution to this would be to do path and ask Guru Ji for the good for the kids which she is already doing. As mentioned above she's already spending all of her day in remembring "Waheguru". She's mostly in chardi kala but still get depressed that the life is so tough. Every one says, the nam will change our karamas from past lives but in her case it seems like her past karams are so strong.
Please resond. I will appreciate any output from you Gursikhs that she does not give up and continue doing meditation for happy family.
Thanks a million

Sat siri akaal. You and I have no idea what her karma is. We only THINK we know. Her present life experience -- though it is karma -- could be MUCH worse. Her sincere observance of naam and rehit has probably mitigated her karma. We have no idea what she did in prior lives and what level of suffering ('bad karma') she has earned, or not. Naam simran certainly creates benefits for her when she leaves this earth plane.

We moderators do not mean to indicate that nothing 'bad' happens by chanting the naam. But ask your sister how she gets through this karma? Ask her how chanting the naam and keeping rehit and nit naym have made her life easier to live.

It seems your sister chose to stay in the same house rather than separate or divorce, making for a divided home. As for her children, parents are trustees for their children until they come of an age to make decisions for themselves. We do not OWN our children, contrary to popular culture. She cannot be blamed nor take full responsibility for her children's rejection of Sikhi. At 15, teenagers are (1) testing out life for themselves and (2) acting out anger at parents. A divided home such as hers with all the child-rearing being on her shoulder (from what you say) is not a guarantee of saintly children. She has done her best with what she has.

Anyway, don't take my word for it. Read Siri Guru Granth Sahib for yourselves. The benefits of keeping the naam far outweigh the results of not doing so. This is in Guru over and over; chanting the naam burns karma.
Guru ang sang,
-DKK
